Kalkan, the Villa Town With a Pool Deck Above the Bay

A luxury villa holiday in Kalkan gives you a private pool and a view of the bay, with a harbour close enough to walk down to. The days run from the deck to the harbour and back again.

The first sound is the pool filter, and the first smell is bread, a loaf that arrived with last night's grocery order and now sits on the kitchen counter. Coffee goes out to the terrace. Below the pool deck the roofs of Kalkan step down towards the harbour, and beyond the headland the sea turns from grey to blue as the sun clears the ridge.

Nothing is booked yet. A villa lets you leave it that way until noon.

The pool is the front room

Most of a Kalkan villa holiday happens on the deck. The pool usually faces the bay, often with an infinity edge, and around it sit sun loungers, a shaded table for lunch and, on many properties, a rooftop terrace and a jacuzzi. A local caretaker typically checks the water and the terrace most days, so you rarely see a net or a hose.

The sea is a separate outing. Kalkan has one small pebble beach, and most swimming happens off decking and rocks at a beach club, or from a boat. That suits a villa day: pool in the morning, sea after lunch, and the pool again at dusk when the light turns copper.

A kitchen, a market and a cook

You will cook one meal, and it will be the easy kind. Order the groceries before you land, then fill the gaps at the Thursday market, where the stalls sell whatever is ripe that week. Slice a tomato, salt it, add olive oil and warm bread, and lunch is done.

For one evening, ask for a private chef. Many villas can arrange one on request. Smoke from the grill drifts over the garden wall, plates travel the length of a long outdoor table, and nobody does the washing up.

The other evenings belong to the town, which eats well, from meyhane lanes to terraces above the bay. Take a taxi down and book one for the ride home. Go up to Islamlar once, about 8 km above Kalkan, where trout pools fed by spring water sit beside the restaurants and breakfast arrives as a spread of bread, eggs, honey and yoghurt under the trees. The air up there is cooler than on the coast.

Out for the morning, back for the pool

The best day trips from a Kalkan villa end early enough for a swim at home. A gulet leaves the harbour mid-morning for Fırnaz and Frank Bay and is back at the quay around five. Kaputaş is about ten minutes along the coast road toward Kaş, and Kaş itself lies 25 to 30 km away, with day boats from its harbour to Kekova and the nearby bays. Patara, 17 km off, offers an ancient city and a long beach in half a day, and Xanthos sits about 20 minutes from town. Saklıkent Gorge lies roughly 30 km inland, where you wade up a canyon in cold water, shallow in places and deeper in others, before driving back to a warm deck.

Editor's picks

  • Swim before breakfast. The pool is empty, the bay is flat and the kettle is on.
  • Stock the fridge from afar.Send the grocery order to the villa manager before you land, so the first evening needs no shop.
  • Book a chef for one night. Many villas arrange one on request, so ask before you arrive.
  • Find the Thursday market.Buy what is ripe and carry it back up the hill.
  • Have breakfast in Islamlar.Trout pools, village bread and cooler air, a short drive up the hill.
  • Give one day to the water.A gulet from the harbour to Fırnaz and Frank Bay, back by five.
  • Drive to Patara in the afternoon. The ancient city and the beach take half a day, and the pool is waiting after.

Insider notes

Xanthos and Patara both accept the Müze Kart, so carry it on the days you go.

Ask where the shade falls at lunch. A deck that faces the bay takes the sun for most of the day, so a pergola or a covered dining table does more for a villa day than any extra.

Villas sit in different parts of town, Kömürlük and Kızıltaş among them. The distance to the harbour runs from a short walk to a drive, and the walk back is uphill. Ask the manager for the time in both directions and where a taxi can stop.
